king of fighters 2001

con il king of fighters 2001 si conclude la saga di N.E.S.T.S. i capi di N.E.S.T.S. (organizzatori dell'edizione 2001 del kof) decidono di mostrare al mondo la loro potenza quindi inviano un loro team al kof i combattenti sono: kula foxy k9999 e angel.

i rappresentanti del nests team erano quasi tutti nuovi lottatori per il torneo e fra loro spiccava la figura di Kula Diamond, l'anti K' che avava già fatto parlare di se durante lo scorso torneo. Al suo fianco vi era la spadaccina Foxy,c he già in passato l'aveva seguita in missione. Gli altri due membri del team erano nuovi agenti NESTS.

La prima dei due era Angel,una giovane e allegra lottatrice dall'apparenza innocua,ma dalle mosse letali. Alle sue spalle però vi era la figura di un giovane dall'apparenza fragile avvolto in una cappa rossa. Il suo aspetto debole celava però una potenza che superava ogli immaginazione. Il suo nome era K9999 ultimo prodotto della scienza di NESTS. Il suo scopo è uccidere K' e il suo team di rinnegati!

Con queste premesse la battaglia si rivelò ancora più furiosa di prima! In più adesso i lottatori poteva anche decidere la loro formazione in battaglia. Essi potevano combattere da soli usandi propri compagni come rinforzo opppure scendere in campo tutti e quattro senza alcun aiuto a disposizione.

La varietà della tecniche dei nuovi arrivati fece si che questo torneo fosse più che una semplice dimostrazione di forza. Solo grazie all'intelligenza e alla pianificazioni si poteva avere ragione dei propri avversari.

il torneo comincia e una cosa sconvolge subito li spettatori kyo kusanagi si fa buttare subito fuori da mai shiranui, che esulta con il suo classico, nippon icchi (sono la numero uno del giappone) il combattimento mostra che kyo non è neanche l'ombra del combattente che era stato un tempo, la nests lo aveva rapito e sottoposto ad ogni genere di esperimento, questo lo ha quasi ucciso, e privato della sua forza compresa la fiamma dei kusanagi.

Nel frattempo il team di K' riuscì ancora una volta ad ottenere il titolo di campione. K' e i suoi compagni nonostante la vittoria non erano affatto convinti che la loro battaglia fosse finita. Infatti Per celebrare la loro vittoria l'hero team venne invitato ad una cerimonia di premiazione che si sarebbe tenuta su un dirigibile. Pronti a tutto i lottatori si imbarcarono sul dirigibile e si avviarono verso la sala principale,dove li aspettavano per la cerimonia. Lì un uomo dall'aspetto familiare li accolse.

Il suo viso era completamente diverso,ma I suoi abiti erano simili a quelli del defunto Zero. Alle sue spalle era accucciato un feroce leone dal pelo nero che li guardava con occhi famelici.

L'uomo si presentò come Zero, il vero Zero. L'uomo che era stato sconfitto da K' a Southtown era solo un clone impazzito di colui che li stava fronteggiando. Prima che i vincitori del Kof potessero dire qualcosa il dirigibile iniziò a tremare.

Motori nascosti entrarono in azione e il pallone si separò dalla sua sezione posteriore divenedo un razzo.
Tutti sono shockati dal susseguirsi degli avvenimenti ma K' al contrario era completamente concentrato su Zero.

K' chiese a Zero lo scopo di tutto ciò.Zero rispose dicendo che gli era stato assegnato il compito di incontrare i vincitori e di saggiarne il valore.

Detto questo Zero richiamò i suoi collaboratori per affiancarlo nella battaglia che sarebbe seguita.Entrambi erano ben noti a K' e alla sua banda:Risorto dopo la sua sconfitta durante il Kof 99,Krizalid era pronto a vendicarsi del torto subito.L'altro era l'uomo che Lin aveva inseguito per lungo tempo,Ron il traditore che ha venduto i suoi compagni in cambio del potere diabolico garantitogli da NESTS.Insieme al leone di Zero,Gluga, e a Zero stesso i 4 formavano una squadra micidiale!


Immediatemente il dirigibile-razzo divenne l'arena di una terribile battaglia.Subito Lin e Ron ingaggiarono una fuoribonda battaglia basata sulla velocità, alla maniera dei Ninja Hizoku. Maxima e Whip dovettero reggere l'attacco combinato di Krizalid e Gluga, mentre K' dovette affrontare Zero in un duello.I quattro membri di NESTS possedevano poteri molto superiori a quelli dagli avversari affrontati finora, ma L'hero team riuscì a superarli comunque, dimostrando di essere i degni vincitori del grande Torneo.

Sconfitto, Zero acccettò la sconfitta onorevolmente e disse a K' di andare incontrare l'uomo in grado di rispondere a tutte le domande che tormentavano lui e suoi compagni. Durante la lotta il dirigibile aveva ormai raggiunto la sua destinazione: una stazione spaziale, il quartier generale di NESTS! L'hero team percorse le sale di quel luogo fino a giungere a una porta metallica.

Essa si aprì di fronte a loro mostrandogli l'esecutivo di NESTS. I tre stavano aspettando il loro arrivo per dare il via alla fase finale di un piano ideato molto tempo prima. Prima che potessero dire qualsiasi cosa,una voce altisonante li salutò.Era la voce di Igniz, CEO di NESTS. Egli disse loro di essere soddisfatto dalla loro performance, dimostrazione di aver soddisfatto l'aspettativa del loro creatore.

Questo discorso valeva sopratutto per K', che aveva superato i suoi fratelli e persino il grande Kyo! Allora K' disse a Igniz che lui avrebbe fatto meglio a preoccuparsi per se stesso invece di perdere tempo con le lodi, poichè lui era venuto su quella base allo scopo di chiudere i conti con NESTS definitivamente.

Contemporaneamente sulla terra, Kula e Foxy avevano osservato la partenza del razzo di Zero ed ora aspettavano gli ordini dell'esecutivo. Improvvisamente Foxy venne colpita alle spalle e stramazzò a terra di fronte agli occhi attoniti di Kula. K9999, affiancato da Angel, seguendo gli ordini di Igniz aveva assassinato la sua compagna!

Dopo l'incontro con K' l'anno precedente, Kula aveva iniziato a provare sentimenti umani e la sua fedeltà verso NESTS vacillava. Così Igniz aveva ordinato a K9999 di liberarsi di lei e della sua compagna non appena avessero compiuto la loro missione.

Il malvagio clone aveva eseguito con gusto l'ordine e adesso si preparava eliminare un altro di quegli inutili scarti che lo avevano ostacolato durante il torneo. Con lacrime di rabbia che le rigavano il volto Kula si apprestava a vendicare Foxy...

Nel frattempo nello spazio Igniz proseguiva nel suo delirio. Era davvero impressionato dal risultato del suo esperimento. Quattro erano i cloni prodotti da NESTS sulla base di Kyo Kusanagi: K', Kula Diamond, Krizalid e K9999.

Grazie al loro operato tuttti i dati di cui NESTS aveva bisogno erano stati ottenuti durante gli ultimi tornei. Per far sì che essi divenissero invincibili essi vennero privati della memoria, in modo da dargli la possibilità di combattere liberi da ogni impedimento e scatenare tutto il loro potenziale.

Nel momento in cui il folle finì di svelare i retroscena del suo piano , la testa dell'anziano uomo che l'hero team credeva essere Igniz venne afferrata da uno dei suoi assistenti. L'uomo con la cappa incenerì il suo ex leader in un istante e lanciò la sua sfida all'hero team. Loro si erano rivelati i più forti del mondo e assorbendo il lor potere Igniz avrebbe potuto superare il livello umano e trascendere verso la divinità!

K' e gli altri risposero al suo invito, ma Igniz non era un avversario comune. Aveva assorbito dentro il suo corpo tre anni di dati di combattimento che gli donavano una straordinaria potenza. Lin,Maxima,Whip e persino K' non potevano competere con lui! I loro attacchi erano completamente inefficaci su Igniz mentre lui li attaccava con una potenza schiacciante.
In pochi istanti l'Hero team era stato sgominato.

Prima che K' potesse tentare una qualche forma di reazione, Igniz si avventò su di lui pronto a finirlo. Ma Prima che Igniz avesse la possibilità di ferire K' una mano fiammeggiante deviò il suo attacco!

Era Kyo Kusanagi, giunto in aiuto del suo clone! E non era solo! Con lui vi erano Terry, Ryo e gli altri campioni del Kof! Dopo essere stato cacciato per due anni Kyo era finalmente giunto al cospetto di Igniz ed era deciso a fargli rimpiangere ciò che aveva fatto. Gli altri erano animati da simili sentimenti decisi a vendicare gli innocenti morti a causa di NESTS.

La battaglia ricominciò, ma anche stavolta Igniz era in vantaggio. La sua forza e velocità gli permisero di sopraffare tutti i suoi avversari, che però erano decisi a non arrendersi di fronte alla sua ambizione. Ispirato da tanto coraggio K' trovò la forza per tornare a combattere e affiancò Kyo in battaglia. Ai due si aggiunse un terzo guerriero, Iori Yagami.

Igniz non era intimorito dalla loro unione ma presto dovette ricredersi. La forza combinata dei tre riuscì lo travolse distruggendo lui e tutto quello che era nella sua base.
Con le sue ultime forze Igniz si trascinò verso due pilastri situati nella parte superiore della sala. Pieno di rabbia per la sua sconfitta, egli disse che visto che questi umani non desideravano l'avvento di un Dio, egli sarebbe divenuto demone per punirli!

La stazione spaziale iniziò a tremare violentemente e qualcuno, guardando attraverso la gigantesca finestra che si trovava nella sala del trono di Igniz, si rese conto che il folle nemico aveva fatto sì che la stazione spaziale cominciasse una folle corsa verso la terra.

Sulla terra Kula era riuscita contenere l'assalto combinato di K9999 e Angel fino a quel momento. Quando stava ormai per cedere di fronte ai due assassini una luce abbagliante distolse la loro attenzione. Essi videro la stazione spaziale di NESTS trasformamsi in un'enorme palla di fuoco e atterrare nell'oceano, creando lunghe colonne di vapore e fumo.

Angel si chiese se quel bizzarro fenomeno non fosse originato dalla caduta della stazione di NESTS e se non fosse accaduto qualcosa al loro capo, ma tutto ciò non interessava minimamnte al suo compagno che era più che deciso a finire il suo lavoro. Non avrebbe perso l'opportunità di uccidere qualcuno che odiava così profondamente e si lanciò all'attacco.
In quel momento un esplosione di fiamme rosse lo allontanò dalla sua vittima. Il responsabile di tutto ciò era l'altra persona che K9999 odiava:K'.

Seppur ferito K' era pronto a difendere la ragazza. Il suo arrivo fece perdere il controllo a K9999 che stava letteralmente impazzendo dalla rabbia. Prima dell'inizio di un altro scontro Angel fermo K9999. Aveva avvistato degli elicotteri che probabilmente appartenevano agli Ikari warriors, quindi era meglio per chiunque appartenesse a NESTS essere lontani al momento del loro atterraggio. Seppur riluttante, K9999 fuggì, ma non prima di lanciare un ultima minaccia a Kula e K'!

Con la partenza di K9999, le ostilità potevano dirsi definitivamente concluse. La lunga battaglia contro NESTS era finalmente conclusa. Nonostante le molte ombre che gravano sul loro futuro K' e tutti quelli le cui vite sono state manipolate da NESTS possono guardare al futuro con un pensiero in meno. Dopo tanta sofferenza,finalmente hanno la possibilità di vivere una nuova vita....

Introduction:

First of all, let's say I'm a beat'em up, a NeoGeo and a KOF freak since the very beginning of the things. I've been playing *each* SNK fighting game, KOF on top, since they originally came out in arcades. I'm into KOF storyline and tradition as well, also 'studying' the SNK original Japanese books and Japanese cultural involvement. So, please expect some hype in what here follows.

I've been playing KOF2001 at the arcade for some days, both single playing (against CPU, I mean) and versus playing. I've also finished the game with a couple of team, beating the bosses and all.

So lets' talk about:


Layout & All Around Look:

I say it's fair good. While most people are complaining about the in-game art, I'm not. Some drawing are really 'weird', yes, but it's a style. Very different from the anime-looking of the 2001, this is more 'hand-draw like' in my opinion. Sometimes really good (kyo, K', Kula, K9999), sometiems really bad (Clark, Goro, Yuri). The intro is pretty good, with a bit of story in it (K9999's 'birth', K' new teaming) and good rythm. Not as good as the 2000 or 96 ones, though. The select screen is quite plain, but also good. The on-screen layout during the battle is *really* good too.

Graphics: Sprites:

Very good. Maybe the best in the series as for the sprites. This year it seems the colour palette as been 'darkned' a little, and I really love it. All the new characters are nice and smooth animated to hell. Old character got some more animation too, and that's good for sure. What is bad here? Some of the 2000-from characters are still undersized as they were (Kula, Hinako), espescially if compared with '98-from sprites (Yuri on top). We got some 98 rip-offs too, say Goro and Heidern, which have been re-painted at least to its former green uniform (which I prefer). Xian-Fei is a 99 rip off, d'oh, and as you know, Andy got a new 'winter' outfit, which is pretty lame IMHO, while Athena new look is fair better that the 2000 one (again, IMO).

Again about the new characters, they really have to be seen! K9999 and May-Lee on top, they're superb in my opinion. Also Angel and Foxy are really good, and you already know Kula which is now a standard character (no more a mid-boss or secret character as she was). The same can be said for the bosses (actually two of them plus three extra striker for the first one), which are awsome. Some of the characters got new victory and entry animation (poses) which are sweet indeed. Terry has a victory were he poses as in MotW saying 'Stand up!' together with a little Rock Howard... just TOO CUTE! Kula has plenty of different entries, the one with ex-Nest chara (K', Maxima) is fantastic, the one vs Foxy even better. Lin is now even cooler in attitude than before. Ramon has special entry and winning pose with his beloved Vanessa. Again I say, must see!


Graphics: Backgrounds:

The backgrounds are well, fair good. I love the style they're made, say the 'actual tournament style' which we saw in 96/97. About realization, there are some that are really nice, some so-and-so, a lame one (the Grand Prix one). Overall good indeed.


Sound: Music:

Music was hard to hear in the arcade I was in. Still, my impression is 2001 sports not real 'tunes' but just some 'beat based basis' for the fighting. An interesting idea, imho. Is seems to work quite good, as build up 'rythm' for the fighting and no more.


Sound: Voices & Effects:

Here is a point where 2001 shines by far as the top of the whole series. This year speech are extra long, extra cool, extra crisp! Some of the best voice actors from the anime scene were aired this year, and you can hear it for sure. Igniz, the final boss, is dubbed by the famous and great Norio Wakamoto. K9999 has the same actor as Tetsuo (from Akira movie) CV, just to make him even a more clear homage to Otomo's masterpiece. May-Lee has Noa Izumi (from Patlabor) CV, to power even up her 'sentai' (Japanese live action super heroes) appeal and look. A lot of characters got new-recorded voices, just as K' (Yuki Matsuda at his best!), Kyo (Masahiro Nonaka goes deeper and deeper with his voice), Iori (ya know), and others. Sound effects are cool and crisp just as you can imagine it. Enough said.


Playability: System:

GREAT, GREAT, GREAT!

First of all, the possibility to choose the number of your strikers and fighters is a GREAT addition. It manages to keep the game and each fight even more various than before. And is very good balanced too when coming to talking about damage system. Also, this new 'ratio-like' system integrates perfecty with the whole power bar thing. As you know, there's just one power bar now, for both strikers and supers. The lengh of the bar, as well as the number of power stock you can, er, stock, depends of the number of strikers you have selected. The more the strikers, the shorter the bar, the higher the number of the power stockable too. While the whole thing may sound a little tricky, it really is VERY simple to get with, SO functional and SO intuitive. The easy and good-lookin interface of the thing helps a lot and it's good.

This system is a work of pure genius IMHO. Out are Counter and Armor modes, and I don't miss them at all. MAXed supers now cost 2 stock (you CAN'T have that if you play with a no-striker team, while you can have up to FOUR stock in a three-strikers team). The 'wire' system (say the hit chara bouncing on 'walls' for juggling) has to be seen in the new 'combo-like' system of the whole game. Yes, KOF2001 is very combo-based. Delay times for all moves has been reduced to hell, so 'entering' with a 'plain hit' is way hard. A plain hit has to become, say, a combo starter. You can easy chain combo, two-in-one, super cancel either. Hard to master. I don't like combo fighting that much, but the system works great. Also, while you can now be able to call up to 3 strikers almost together, the striker system has been re-balanced from the overpowered it was in 2000. Now is more tricky. Go for it.


Playability - New Characters:

GOOD! GOOD! GOOD!

All the new characters are VERY interesting and fun to play. Since 99 SNK has tried to develop new playbility with the new faces iin KOF, the 2000 followed the trend , and same is 2001!

K9999 - a new starring indeed, made to be K' definitive rival. He's incredibly cool and strong, a badass indeed. All hes move have to do with 'mutating body'. His supers are EXTRA cool&strong. He is very slow indeed to, and he can hadly combo moves. With just two basic special and almost no combo capabilty, this is a very unique character with a unique and someway 'classical' way of play.

Foxy - again, way cool and way strong. Here combo is the key, with a lot of follow-ups in specials. Has very interesti MAXed-only supers, and interesting style of play due to his fencing.

May Lee - simply TOO cool! This gal ROCK! You can aspect big counters and striking moves, but go for his 'duoble-style' fighting! May-Lee can enter in a super HERO mode, where ALL her moves actually CHANGE to a powerful yet not-blocking fighting style. AWESOME characters.

Angel - Maybe the strangest of the crew. Instead of a specials, she uses a special 'circle combo' system which is totally unique to her, based on a strange special combo pattern. Very hard to masterize and worthful to play. Her attitude is very weird, she looks a bit 'wacko', just as a K9999 sexual slave addicted. Seriously.

As you know, Jhun and Kasumi are out... I miss them wery much! Why not to kill stupid Hinako instead?


Story & Trivia:

Just as Eolith promised, the game is very strong in storytelling! All the teams make sense now (not as previous years), and the character roster is not only the largest, but the best assorted in the whole series maybe (rivaling with 96 and 97). We have a lot of special intros, coupling on character, special speech... you know. I love that stuff. It all goes smooth in the story mode through the super cool bosses, which integrates A LOT with the story. The endings are great, and also point out some story bits for 2002! Eh, eh... Nest is dead, but expect chinese legends, ninjas clans, psychic power to be the main things next year! Unfortunately, the staff roll is nothing cool as was in 2000, sigh.


More Trivia: Special Animations

Kula vs Ex-Nest Special Entry: Diana and Foxy appear, cross their faces on top of the little girl and shout 'Yabou no tameni' = 'for the ambition', while Kula's hair turn blue, ready for battle.

Kula vs Foxy Special Entry: Kula appears in a Santa Claus like coat, licking a lollypop as the little girl she is. Diana appears near to Foxy, and says to her ear 'be easy on the little one', then Diana dash out-street taking Kula's coat and lollypop away.

K' vs K9999: They both special taunt each other with extra-cool attitude.

Ramon vs Vanessa Special Intro: Ramon appears in a very excited expression, with his hands on face, and a little heart come out of his face while he shout 'Vanessa, as I know you're really beautiful!'.

Ramon vs Vanessa Special Win: Ramon goes near the beaten Vanessa, down on his knees as a gentleman and declare 'Miss Vanessa, whould you marry me?'.

Andy vs Mai Special Intro: Mai present a little baby to Andy, who's scared to hell. The baby start to walk toward her 'father' but turn to be just a ninja trick.

Kyo vs Iori Special Intro: SUPER COOL - both fighters appear in the middle of the screen, shoulder to shoulder. Kyo raises his head and ask 'Temee no hono ga nanin iru da?' (what colour are your flames?), Iori turn his head to him and replies 'Ita non koto wa soredake ka? Naraba...' (this is all you have to ask? Then...) at that point both thurst their flames and the resulting explosion repels the fighters leading them to the start round places. Note that the speech here is a homage to a famous Hokuto no Ken (Fist of the North Star) dialogue 'What colour is your blood' etc...


Overall:

KOF2001 is just an AWESOME game! Very different from the previous (and not so good IMHO) one, very rich, full of things to be played, seen, enjoyed, mastered. SNK and Eolith have done a supreme work creating a game eight in a series which is nothing like boring or 'old'. This IS the best beat'em up EVER made.

Just do not miss it!
